Starting big school is a huge milestone for both a child and their family. We guide our families through this change with a comprehensive Transition process to ensure we assist with making this experience as smooth as possible.
At St Cecilia’s we have a very extensive Kindergarten transition program, meticulously designed to ensure a smooth and enjoyable start to your child’s educational journey. This comprehensive program encompasses several key components, each aimed at providing both you and your child with the support and preparation needed for this important milestone. Here are the main elements of our transition program:
- Interview with the Principal and Child Screener with the Learner Diversity Teacher
Each family will have the opportunity to meet with our Principal and our Learner Diversity teacher. These interviews allow us to understand your child’s unique needs and abilities, ensuring that we can provide personalised support right from the start.
- Bright Beginnings Playgroup
We organise the Bright Beginnings Playgroup (once a month), where children are invited to attend to familiarise themselves with their new school setting, meet staff members, interact with prospective year 5 buddies, and engage in various activities. This playgroup helps children feel comfortable and excited about their new environment.
- Daycare Visits and Observations
Our Learner Diversity Team visits local daycares to observe children in their current settings and build relationships with them before they start school. These visits also help children become acquainted with a familiar face from their new school, easing their transition.
- Three Orientation Sessions – HeadStart Program
We conduct three orientation sessions with the upcoming year’s Kindergarten teachers and various support staff. During these sessions, children have the opportunity to engage in a range of play-based activities and get to know their teachers and some potential classmates, making the first day of school less daunting, plus giving us further insights into your child and any specific strengths or challenges to overcome together.
- Parent Information Session
We offer a detailed information session for parents to provide insights into the kindergarten daily routines, curriculum, and ways to support your child at home before they start school. This session aims to equip you with the knowledge and resources to help your child succeed.
- Parent Prayer and Social Gathering
Recognising the importance of community, we organise prayer and social gatherings for parents. These events provide an opportunity to connect with other parents, share experiences, and build a supportive network. One of these key social gatherings is our traditional Tears n Tissues morning which we invite all parents to join us for after they drop their child off on the first day of Kindergarten.
- Best Start Assessments
At the start of the new school year, we conduct Best Start Assessments to gauge each child’s readiness for kindergarten. These assessments help us tailor our teaching strategies to meet each child’s individual needs, ensuring they get off to the best possible start.
At St Cecilia’s we are committed to making the transition to Kindergarten a positive and successful experience for your child. Should you have any questions or need further information, please do not hesitate to reach out. Together, we can ensure that your child feels confident, happy, and ready to embark on this exciting new chapter.
